Keeping the food bills cheap - how I do it

This may sound like an impossible task, but, I was once a Sainsburys devotee, spending upwards of £100 a week on food - and that was back when it was me, my husband and a toddler. Fast forward to now, we're a family of 5 with a puppy in tow, and I can bring it in around £40 a week. That covers 79 meals a week (my eldest has school lunches) across 2 adults and 2 kids as well as food for our two cats and puppy.

So, how do I do it?

  • Make a list - as things run out during the week, I pop them on a list I keep stuck to the fridge. That way, I don't overbuy things because I can't quite remember.
  • Supermarket hop - I'm fortunate enough to have all the budget supermarkets nearby, Lidl, Aldi and Netto. I'm also walking distance from most of the bigger supermarkets too, so I take advantage of it. I pick up the super six from Aldi, pop to Jack Fulton for short dated crisps (they don't last long with my husband around anyway!), head to the greengrocer for fruit & veg and top up other bits wherever is cheapest.
  • Bulk buy deals - I don't mean the sort of deals that come up all the time, like fajita kits, crisps and the like, I mean serious reductions. Our local Waitrose reduce their fruit and veg heavily sometimes, so I buy it up while I can. A recent example is red peppers, reduced to 30p a kilo, making each pepper about 5p - I made red pepper soup and roasted pepper pasta sauce for the freezer as well as chopping and freezing some in portions for cooking at a later date.
  • Check the cost per gram - my husband is guilty of choosing the cheaper option on the label without checking the weight. Pasta, rice, pulses - they are generally cheaper in larger packets, and they keep just fine.
  • Make your own treats - I try to make a batch of flapjacks and muesli every week, that way I know what we're eating and it works out cheaper too.
  • Don't snub own brands - I buy a lot of porridge oats - a bag of Asda Smartprice oats are 75p a kilo, the same from Quaker is £2.18. Surely oats are oats?

Meal Planning Monday #2

Happy Bank Holiday Monday folks - I hope you're enjoying some sunshine and happiness wherever you are!

We stuck to our plan last week, though it was hard at times. We're in the process of trying to sell our home at the moment which means I've become militant mum when it comes to the house being clean and tidy. Cooking fish and curry are not the best way to sell a house.

This week we will be eating:

  • Monday - Sausages & burgers - we're heading over to a friends for a BBQ shortly, so we'll be devouring lots of meat and beer!
  • Tuesday - Huevos Rancheros - eggs baked in a spicy Mexican tomato stew
  • Wednesday - Wrap 'pizzas', using up the inevitably left over wraps from Tuesday's tea
  • Thursday - Smoked fish pie
  • Friday - Lentil & sweet potato curry
  • Saturday - Chilli & home made garlic wedges
  • Sunday - It'll either be a chicken roast with all the trimmings or a roast chicken with salad, eaten al fresco - weather dependent

What are you eating this week?

Meal Planning Monday #1

As a stay at home mum, my main weekly expense is the food shop. I'm willing to cut corners in some areas (mainly treats), but I am one of those mums who's insistent on their offspring eating lots of fruit, veg, nuts and the like. As a result of this, it's hard to keep the shopping budget as low as some I've seen.

We're a household of 5, but the littlest is only 8 weeks so he's obviously not counted and I try and keep everything below £40.

This week we will be eating:

  • Monday - Cottage Pie (batch cooked for an easy tea straight from the freezer)
  • Tuesday - Thai chicken curry & coconut rice
  • Wednesday - Chicken enchiladas & Mexican quinoa salad
  • Thursday - Wrap 'pizzas' - a make your own tea with salami, tomato, peppers, onions and cheese for the boys to top as they wish
  • Friday - Wagamama style noodle soup - Yasai Itame is my absolute favourite dish and we often have my take on it with lots of veg and tofu
  • Saturday - Tapas - a weekend favourite, we buy a crusty baguette, salami, olives, cheese and I'll throw together some patatas bravas
  • Sunday - Salmon tagliatelle - my boys love smoked salmon and it's so easy to put together, perfect for the back to school/work ironing/tidying/homework rush on a Sunday evening.

What are your family favourites?

Introductions

Hello!

I'm Celia, mother of three wonderful bundles of fun, aged 5, 2 and 1 month and a schnoodle puppy called Max. I was once a purveyor of fine things, with a handbag collection worthy of note and a penchant for fine dining and cocktails. These days, I'm happiest in my wellies; walking my puppy with a little hand in each of mine.

I was made redundant just before my eldest was born, so had no job to return to. It was a fast descent from career chasing go-getter to a PJs at midday kinda stay at home mum to 3. I'm not in the market for a new job right now, but we are definitely in the market for a bigger house since the littlest has arrived.

This blog is intended to document the ways in which I'll be saving all the pennies I can to plough into that forever home; the places I shop, ideas for making a little extra money, that sorta thing.

I'd love you to join me for the ride and any tips on tightening our belts that little bit further or expanding the piggy bank would be wonderful.
